I'm interested in getting a food processor but would love some advice. I'd like one that slice and kneads dough. Or do they all? I was looking at this one from Macy's but it has very little information on it.
So any recommendations?
Thanks!

looks good to me - we do not have that brand in Switzerland
1Cuisinart is a very good brand from what I've heard. I wasn't aware that food processors could knead dough though, I figured you'd have to have a stand mixer for that?
2I have used a Cuisinart for many years now and think that they work great. In fact, I use the Mini Prep for small things and the big one for major things, especially slicing, shredding and mixing. The mini only mixes, chops and blends but it's great for making hummus, for example, for two.
3I will offer one observation and caution you that it is a personal one. I have owned smaller Cuisinarts and firmly believe that the biggest bowl you can find will serve you best. With that said, if you always make small amounts of food, you may be happy with the 7 cup, but I encourage you to go larger, especially, as I suspect, that the bigger model has a bigger more powerful motor. I have an 11 cup and I am not giving it up until the circuit breaker pops on it. In all honesty, my mixer does a better job at making bread dough and it sometimes strains on a 500 watt motor.
Cuisinart is an excellent brand.
Eleuthera has some great advice. I have a smaller food processor but that's because I just cook for me 99% of the time. I would seriously recommend a bigger size bowl if you are going to be prepping food for more than one person.
As far as the bread making, I always use a mixer so I couldn't tell you if how well a food processor works for that purpose.
4Thanks Eleuthera.
5Ash - I thought I read somewhere once that it could knead dough. I'll see if I can find it.

6I have the Kitchen Aid and it kneads dough like a dream.

It only shows numbers on the bottom but not a model name. It's this one. And mine came with this box containing 2 shredding discs, the kneading blade and other parts.

That's pretty cool! It's good to know, even though I've never made bread before!
11I didn't make bread, I made some kind of quiche or pie dough, goodness I can't remember right now...

You can make pasta dough in a food processor
13Yes but get a pasta machine first or else you'll roll your way to getting Superman's biceps.

You can knock out a pie dough or any other pastry crust easily in a food processor and even make, as someone mentioned, pizza dough. However, after years of trying to do it another way in a food processor, although it touts that it can be done and I have done it, I assure you that you will be much happier with a heavy duty mixer of about 500 watts or greater with a dough hook in kneading bread. This is especially true when making multiple loaves. I also use the mixer attachment to roll the pasta.. when I have that much energy:)
15Thanks everyone.
16im not sure about dough but ive got a mini food processor from cuisineart and it works nicely
17I have an old GE Food Processor that I have had for about 25 years. It cost a whopping $20. I broke a couple of the attachments (dough and slicer/shredder) and found replacements at garage sales. The thing just keeps working...it won't die! Very inexpensive machine and it has been wonderful. I did buy another food processor at a yard sale which is high-end. The brand name is Moulinex. It's a good machine but not very user friendly which is why someone probably sold it at a garage sale...but it has a chute on it and it will throw out dozens of sliced potatoes in just a few seconds. I think you could probably buy a new GE processor the equivalent of what I have for about $30 now. Check Wal-Mart. Cuisinart is going to cost you a minimum of $150.00. The GE will serve you well for a fraction of the cost.
