I was talking to bookgirl today about how cooking and the preparation required has recently become very therapeutic for me. I'm not a person that particularly loves or really enjoys cooking, but with the main stress right now of the 9-5 that I’m not crazy about, cooking has become very relaxing for me.
So this got me thinking (of course!), about what tips other people have about anything related to food. I wanted to share one thing I do that I got from my momma. It's basis and many people know it but my mom does this without fail!
Garlic is a pretty big staple ingredient in most Chinese cooking. She wraps the garlic in a paper towel (you don't have to do this part) and then wraps that in newspaper. Doing this helps the garlic keep longer and stay fresher. We also do this with vegetables. So needless to say, my mom's fridge has a lot of newspaper!
Any tips y'all want to share? It doesn't have to be anything crazy, basic ones like this are great too.

Thanks for the tip! I never knew that! I buy garlic all the time but by the time it's almost gone the last bit has gone bad.
1To help keep your brown sugar from clumping you can put a piece of fresh bread in the container. The bread draws the moisture out of the sugar, therefore keeping it fluffy.
Another tip is to put some rice in your salt shaker... It helps basically do the same thing!
2I'm sure tons of people know this, but it was new to me . . . you can use dental floss to split a cake in two. It is much easier than sawing through it with a knife.
3Over on YumSugar we are always posting new and interesting tips. You should check it out you could learn a lot. For example how to turn leftovers into tasty dips and how to peel peaches but there are tons more. Hope that helps!
4wow really? wrapping veggies and garlic in newspaper sounds cool, I'll try it. The florida weather wilts everything out in a day!

I soooo could have used that tip on garlic for the past couple of years!
Now I buy
the peeled and sealed kind from Trader Joe's. Fabulous!
9Oh and hey....does the newspaper trick work for say basil??? I hate buying a bunch of it and half of it going bad before I get to it.
10great tips everyone!
radarkitty - for basil, treat it like fresh cut flowers. snip the ends at a 45 degree angle and put them in a vase (so only the tips are submerged) they should last a few days that way. For other herbs (like cilantro and parsley), wrap them in a damp (wet but not dripping) paper towel and put them in a almostly completely sealed ziploc bag (leave the corner open).
11aha good tips Yum! I guess I'd follow the same instructions for mint... I have mojitos in mind...
