OK... so I like themes when it comes to food... silly but true. Seeing some Elvis Reeses Cups gave me a flash of deep fried inspiration.
The Deep Fried Elvis Cupcake.
Which I'm trying to work up the courage to try... Why? Well, everyone knows Elvis was not known for going light on the food. He liked it big, gooey, and fat laden. One report I read said Elvis, in his younger days, would eat 8 burgers in a sitting... plus fries and shakes (notice plural). So all this got me to thinking... what, oh what would Elvis do... cupcake-wise.
And so my weird little brain concocted a recipe. Yes... a gooey... peanut-buttery... deep fried piece of maddness. Which for obvious reasons concerning my health, I have not yet tried.
And here comes the challenge part. Since its a rather... ODD idea... The first person to do this... make a batch, eat one, take pictures and post a photo album of the whole thing... I'll give a $50 tip here on team sugar, I'll throw in an extra $10 if you film it and post it here on team sugar... and another $10 if you can convince a group of people to eat them with you. Why... because I'm too chicken to do it myself... although I will, and I'll film it too... eventually. And, it sounds like sticky fun to boot...and a possible $70 in sugar money. But, of course, I have rules.
1. The recipe must be followed exactly. I want at least 1 pic of all the ingredients.
2. I want a couple pics of you making them... mixing, filling, battering, frying, frosting...
3. 1 pic taking a bite of the finished madness.
4. And one pic of your reaction. Group reactions if you are going for the bonus points.
5. Everything should be posted here, on team sugar... because I would rather not travel the entire internet to find stuff. But I'm sure your friends elseware would be amused.
6. This is for fun... so if you are grossed out entirely, have food alergies, can't eat sugar... your doctor freaks out... Do NOT do this.
7. The first person to email me, with a successful Elvis cupcake... "wins".
8. If the Mods really hate this idea... I will respect their wishes and delete... but I thought I'd give it a shot.
9. BE CAREFUL! and follow all instructions, safety precautions regarding deep frying... whether its this or anything for that matter.
OK... so on to the recipe part.
The cake part of the cupcake must be made using "Elvis's favorite poundcake recipe" which I found at Epicurious: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/232642
The cupcakes need to be filled with mashed bannana and smooth/creamy peanut butter.
Be sure to put the "cap" back on top.
Dip the cupcakes in some form of batter. Maybe even coat in cookie crumbs?
CAREFULLY deep fry cupcakes.
Drain off excess oil.
Top with Peanut Butter frosting. Use a cream cheese frosting recipe, but replace half of the cream cheese with peanut butter. You can use a pastry bag to top with or use a knife...
Top with carmalized banana slices. Like you would do for Bananas Foster... but no rum. Butter and brown sugar only.
Sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles.
Scared yet... I sure am. I'm going to do this eventually regardless of whether anyone else does or not. I have a feeling my mouth will need to be pried open after though. Well, its not like I'm asking you to eat bugs... Its a peanut butter banana cupcake... which happens to be fried.
Oh dear.

I really hope someone tries this.
1Blech, I think I could make this, but I doubt I could get a picture of myself or anyone else I know actually EATING it!
2I don't think I could eat it either. I do like the new peanut butter cups with banana creme in them though! They are really good!
3This sounds awesome, I hope some folks give it a try!
4I'll give bonus points for pompador styled frosting too...
5lol
I am trying to work up the courage too.
6I would not be able to eat that, but I could propably con my bf to try it.
7I can barely survive his grilled banana/peanut butter sandwiches.
But I really hope someone
tries this! What a fun idea, sarahkushner!!
8I would so do this if I had a halfway decent kitchen!!!
They don't sound half bad to eat, either. In Vegas last week I had deep fried oreos and deep fried twinkies on Freemont street.
Yum-a-licious
9MMMMMM, I would but I think I might :puke:
10I'm dying to see if someone actually tries this!
11That picture cracks me up
12I would totally try these, but I'm scared of the deep fryer. It's hot, and it pops. Eek!
13I am so tempted to try this. But I don't have a deep fat fryer. Curse you sarahkushner for your perkiness and inventiveness!
14I'm going to to grocery store on the way home from work and I'm planning on trying it tonight.
Does it still count if I make them and force my boyfriend to eat them?
Also, do I have to have a deep fryer to fry them?
15I would do it if I didn't completely HATE HATE HATE bananas, and if I had a deep fryer. Maybe you should send your post to Rachael Ray and get her to do it. LOL.
16Ow...my heart actually hurt a bit when I read that cupcake description...
17I haven't had the chance to make them yet, I had a busy night last night... BUT I did get the ingredients and I'm planning to try it tomorrow. I'm always up for a good cupcake adventure.
18WOO HOO! A contender!
19No... You don't need a deep fryer... I'll be using a big pan when I do it...
YEAH!
I cant wait to see this.
DID ANYONE MAKE THESE YET?
20No one yet... and I've been too busy :*(
